Victory! Wisconsin Court Orders Accurate Birth Certificates for Children of Same-Sex Spouses

(Madison, WI, September 14, 2016) – Today, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin ruled that the state of Wisconsin must issue accurate birth certificates listing both parents for the children of married same-sex couples, including the son of Lambda Legal clients Chelsea and Jessamy Torres, a married lesbian couple.

Federal Court Blocks North Carolina From Enforcing Anti-Transgender Law, H.B. 2, Against Transgender Plaintiffs While Lawsuit Proceeds

RALEIGH, N.C. —A federal court today granted a request to stop the University of North Carolina from enforcing H.B. 2, the state law that bans many transgender people from restrooms that match their gender identity, against three transgender individuals who are challenging the law in court. In granting the preliminary injunction, the court found that the challengers are likely to succeed in their argument that the law violates Title IX.

District Court Issues Injunction Against Guidance Protecting Transgender Students

(Fort Worth, TX – August 22, 2016) – A U.S. District Court judge today issued a preliminary injunction against the federal government’s guidance to public school districts regarding their legal responsibility to allow transgender students to use the same restrooms as other students. The ruling came in the multi-state lawsuit, Texas v. United States.
