Lambda Legal Sues Missouri Department of Corrections and Corizon Health Inc. for Denying Health Care to Incarcerated Transgender Woman

(St. Louis, MO, August 22, 2016) — Today, Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Jessica Hicklin, a 37-year-old transgender woman incarcerated at the Potosi Correctional Center, a facility for male inmates, in Mineral Point, Missouri. The case challenges a Missouri Department of Corrections (MDOC) “freeze-frame” policy that bars access to hormone therapy for inmates and others in custody if they were not receiving treatment prior to incarceration.

Federal Bulletin on Transgender Bathroom Access in Federal Buildings a ‘Win for Equality & Dignity’

District Court Hears Challenge to Federal Guidance Protecting Transgender Students and Employees

(FORT WORTH, Texas) – Five leading national civil and LGBT rights organizations urged the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas to reject an effort to block the Obama administration’s interpretations of several federal laws pending trial in Texas v. United States, including federal guidance advising public school districts across the country that the federal Departments of Justice and Education believe that transgender students should be allowed to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity.

Seventh Circuit Rules Against Lesbian Instructor Fired from Her Job

(Chicago, July 28, 2016) – Today, in a surprise decision, U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a trial court judgment dismissing Lambda Legal client Kimberly Hively’s discrimination complaint against her former employer, Ivy Tech Community College, which denied Hively full-time employment and promotions because she is a lesbian.

Lambda Legal Urges Investigation into Sexual Assaults of Incarcerated LGBT People in Texas

(New York, NY– July 28, 2016) – Following the state of Texas’s latest assurance to the U.S. Department of Justice that it will work towards fully complying with Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) in future years, Lambda Legal today sent a letter to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) PREA Ombudsman, urging investigations into several reports of sexual assault and abuse against LGBT people in Texas’s prison system.

State Department Got It Wrong in Denying Passport to Intersex Citizen, Lambda Legal Tells Court

(Denver, CO, July 20, 2016) – Lambda Legal today argued in federal district court that the U.S. State Department erred when it refused to issue a passport to Dana Zzyym, a U.S. citizen and Navy veteran who is intersex and does not identify as male or female. The State Department denied Dana’s passport application because Dana could not accurately choose either male or female on the passport application form, and the form does not provide any other gender marker designation.
