(Chicago, IL, November 19, 2015) — Today, Lambda Legal settled a lawsuit filed on behalf of two gay men who were unlawfully forced to exit a taxi after they exchanged a brief kiss. As part of the voluntary settlement, the driver of the taxi has apologized to the men and has agreed to make a donation to a local LGBT-focused charity, the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance.

(November 19, 2015,) – Last night, the Northwestern Lehigh school board in New Tripoli, PA announced that it would continue its current practice to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and single-sex facilities that match their gender identity. The Board explicitly rejected efforts by the anti-LGBT Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to implement policies that would discriminate against transgender students.

(Chicago, IL) – This afternoon a bill to amend the civil rights code was introduced in the Indiana Senate—after reviewing the bill Jennifer Pizer, Law and Policy Project Director at Lambda Legal issued the following statement:

“This bill is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This doesn’t protect LGBT people—it is a road map for discrimination against LGBT people.

"Surviving spouses shouldn’t be penalized because they were excluded from marriage for most of their time together."

“Any bill that gives businesses permission to discriminate against LGBT people in the name of religion, or that fails to protect transgender people is unacceptable. We hope Indiana’s leaders have learned that legislating intolerance is bad for the state and moves us backward instead of forward.”

(New York, November 9, 2015) —Lambda Legal sent a letter to the Le Roy Central School District urging the school board to adopt inclusive bathroom policies that are consistent with the District’s current practice of respecting the gender identity of its students and in line with federal and state law.

(Houston, TX, November 3, 2015) – Today, Houston voters went to the polls and rejected the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), defeating a citywide ordinance that would have prohibited discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation on the basis of race, age, gender, pregnancy, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or military status.

(New York, November 3, 2015)—Late yesterday, Lambda Legal joined the National Women’s Law Center and other allied organizations in filing a friend-of-the-court brief in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, a case pending at the U.S. Supreme Court for the second time challenging the use of race in undergraduate admissions decisions.

(New York, October 29, 2015) — Lambda Legal has filed an amended complaint in a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of Thomas Hamm against the City of New York and New York City Department of Correction (DOC) officers and supervisors after a brutal attack on Mr. Hamm while he visited his partner, P.F., at a men’s facility on Rikers Island.
