(September 3, 2015, New York, NY) – The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today released proposed rules that clarify that transgender people are protected from a broad range of health care discrimination under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, the first federal civil rights law that provides protections on the basis of sex in health care.

(Chicago, August 20, 2015) – Today, in a status conference with Lambda Legal in federal court in Chicago, the Department of Justice announced that the Social Security Administration (SSA) will apply the U.S. Supreme Court's recent landmark marriage ruling retroactively and process pending spousal benefits claims for same-sex couples who lived in states that did not previously recognize their marriages.

(Washington, D.C., July 23, 2015)—Today Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley and Rhode Island Representative David Cicilline, together with lead co-sponsors Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), introduced the Equality Act, a bill to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, credit, education, and jury service.
